Born of Cuban, Chinese, and Scots-Irish ancestry, Hugo’s music is as diverse as his origins. Searching for a connection to his Cuban heritage, he arrived in the Florida Keys and immediately fell in love with the area. It was in those early Key West years that Hugo met and developed a professional friendship with the Calypso Poet, Jimmy Buffett.

Over the years Buffett would call or stop by when he was in town, often sitting in with Hugo and the band. They occasionally shared the stage at a locally owned bar called Del Rios where Hugo was performing, and which today is the original Margaritaville Bar and Restaurant.
